TriEssential Triathlon Training – Learn Your Gears

When I had the chance last season to work with the Team in Training Triathlon Team in Boston, I learned quickly during our group rides how little new triathletes really “knew” about riding.  This was rather evident whenever we would come to any decent incline as an example.  Learn your gears and know when to use them.

We’ve all experienced this before, new and experienced riders alike, however, after you’ve done it enough particularly when riding with a large pack, you know that dropping a chain at the bottom of a climb is the last thing you want to do.  As is the case with much in the sport of triathlon, you must learn to anticipate things before they happen.  When it comes to your bike, learning your gears and how to use them will make you a more efficient cyclist, as well as much safer.

For example, you’re riding along and come upon a large hill.  If you’re new to the sport you’ll most likely be stuck in a larger gear which will slow you down considerably once the gravitational forces start to pull on you.  You’re first reaction will immediately be to drop down into a higher gear, however, if you don’t have enough speed to do this your chain will come off and you will be stuck dead in your tracks.  Don’t be this rider who either loses the pack as they ride off up the hill or creates a dangerous situation to those following behind who now have to either also slow down to avoid running into you or become stuck themselves.

Anticipate the hills for  gearing selection and when to make changes.  The same can be said for cresting a hill.  As you come out of a steep climb learn to “gear down” to a larger gear as you get over the hump of the climb.  The most efficient cyclists are those who utilize their gearing perfectly and never miss a beat.  They are those riders who truly are always pedaling at the right tension.
